Facial Rejuvenation (Cosmetic) Acupuncture

What is facial acupuncture?

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, also known as cosmetic acupuncture, is anti-ageing, relaxes the muscles of the face, and boosts collagen to reduce wrinkles. It also increases circulation and boosts elastin to firm and tone the face, and promotes detoxification to leave a clearer, more even complexion.

How does facial acupuncture work?

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture restores systemic or whole-body health to revitalize the skin of the face.

During treatment, 40 to 70 tiny and painless needles are inserted on the face. As the needles puncture the skin, they create wounds within its threshold, which are called positive microtraumas. When your body senses these wounds, it goes into repair mode. This is the same idea microneedling uses to get bright, anti-ageing results — except acupuncture is a bit less intense, averaging about 50 punctures, whereas microneedling applies hundreds of pricks through a rolling device.

These punctures stimulate the lymphatic and circulatory systems, which work together to deliver nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, nourishing the skin from the inside out. This helps even out the complexion and promotes the skin's glow. The positive microtraumas also stimulate the production of collagen, which improves elasticity, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.

What are the benefits and side effects?

Cosmetic acupuncture is a safe, minimally invasive treatment. It has a relatively short treatment time and a patient can return to daily living right after treatment. It is also relatively reasonable in treatment costs. The most common side effect for facial acupuncture, the same as any acupuncture, is bruising.

How does facial acupuncture differ from non-traditional cosmetic treatments?

Unlike Botox or dermal fillers, facial acupuncture is not a quick fix of any kind. In cosmetic acupuncture, the focus is to maintain the long-term health of the skin and body, not to create short-term changes. Cosmetic acupuncture provides better collagen stimulation, a brightened skin tone, reduced jaw tension, and a softer appearance overall on top of health benefits like reduced anxiety and tension. One study found that the majority of people saw improvements after just five sessions of facial acupuncture.

At Gathered Roots, we offer facial rejuvenation acupuncture combined with 10 min Gua sha (Chinese massage) on the face. We recommend a total of 10 sessions, done once or twice a week, to see optimum results. After that, you can enter a “maintenance stage,” where you get the treatment every four to eight weeks.
