We must all occasionally deal with major upheavals or emotional distress in our lives. Stress is a natural response of the body to the various demands we place on it, but, at times, these events can trigger a host of unexpected feelings and behaviours from depression, anxiety and panic attacks to major disruptions in sleep and eating. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine offer natural ways to treat these mental health issues.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, emotions are narrowed down to five basic feelings that are each associated with a corresponding element and organ in the body:
Wood (Liver): Anger, jealousy, frustration, resentment, bitterness, and stress
Fire (Heart): Over-excitation and mania
Earth (Spleen): Anxiety, pensiveness, and worry
Metal (Lung): Grief and sadness
Water (Kidney): Fear, depression, and lack of will
Traditional Chinese medicine tells us that mental distress occurs when there is an imbalance within the body. Imbalance can come from an excess or deficiency of yin and yang that disrupts the flow of qi or energy through the body.
At Gathered Roots, we offer individually customized treatment for each patient to treat the root cause of the problem by helping to rebalance the body’s internal environment. It is recommended to come in at regular intervals, weekly, for at least 10-12 sessions to complete one course of treatment.
