Prenatal, Birth and Postpartum Care Acupuncture and Pregnancy

Early Pregnancy

Early pregnancy is an amazing time filled with great transformation. However, it can also be a time of difficult challenges for a new mother if she has issues with:
  • morning sickness
  • threatened miscarriage
  • exhaustion
  • anxiety
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can help support women through these times by easing symptoms, and strengthening the newly pregnant mother as she transitions through this period.

Throughout Pregnancy

As little baby grows and develops so does mother's body.  It is during this time an expecting mother may experience new aches and pains as well as some common syndromes.  Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can help alleviate many of these including:
  • hip pain
  • hemorrhoids
  • sciatica
  • heartburn
  • constipation
  • urinary tract infections
  • itching
  • depression
  • insomnia
  • sinusitis
  • pregnancy induced hypertension
  • edema

Preparing for Labour

It is recommended to come in for a few sessions before your due date for "cervical ripening" in which acupuncture points are selected to help prep the body for labour.  Women who come in for 2-4 treatments before giving birth show to have easier deliveries with less complications.

However, as labour approaches, there are a few specific acupuncture techniques that can be done in cases of:
  • malpresentation and breech baby
  • induction if baby is overdue

During Labour

More and more women are committed to having natural births without medications or pain medicine. Whether you are having a home or hospital birth, consider making an acupuncturist part of your birthing team. Acupuncture during labour can assist in:
  • labour augmentation
  • pain management
  • optimal fetal positioning

Patients' Comments:

"Gathered Roots Community Acupuncture is a warm, inviting and beautiful place! I just had a moxibustion treatment with Fiona the owner and found her to be very knowledgeable, open and kind. Being 9 months pregnant, she even went out of her way to bring me a refill of the moxa sticks as I live in the neighborhood and wasn't able to drink or eat for a test I was having that day. Talk about service! I would highly recommend Gathered Roots for acupuncture, moxibustion or any other holistic treatment they may offer." -T.M July, 2013

"Baby flipped!  I can't believe this but I found out last week that the baby is head down! I don't know if it was patience, moxibustion, breech tilts or sheer will but it's amazing!" -T.M July, 2013

"Success! I just thought you would be excited to know that my labour started only a handful of hours after my induction acupuncture session :) ...It was a really smooth labour and I think the acupuncture really helped :)" -M.H July 2014

"I gave birth to a baby boy at home this past Sunday!  My labour was much shorter than last time and we were pleased with how well everything went.  I'm really happy that I discovered gathered roots for this pregnancy and I don't doubt that the treatments played a part in preparing me for labour." -O.D Oct 2015
